Marcus Im, rector of Macao Polytechnic University was interviewed by the Times Higher Education. The interview highlighted MPU’s sustainable development initiatives and global impact, and it has been published in the “Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024”.
During the interview, rector Im emphasized MPU’s mission to steer towards a sustainable future with technologies as driver. Through cutting-edge technologies, interdisciplinary research and global collaborations, MPU fosters innovative applications that benefit all. In recent years, MPU established the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Driven Drug Discovery, and MPU-UC Joint Research Laboratory in Advanced Technologies for Smart Cities in collaboration with the University of Coimbra in Portugal. These initiatives have resulted in building platforms for research excellence and nurturing interdisciplinary talents with global outlook. By harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, MPU stimulates interdisciplinary progress in various fields, including healthcare, education, cultural preservation and environment for a sustainable future.
MPU’s successful cases shared in the interview showing that MPU’s academic achievements have gained international recognitions and have been contributing to global sustainable development. MPU’s invention Canarin, a cloud-based realtime environmental monitoring system, is in use at the Joanine Library in Coimbra to safeguard world heritage sites. MPU’s Chinese-Portuguese Neural Network Machine Translation Platform and the Chinese-Portuguese-English Voice Recognition and Simultaneous Interpretation System are being used by the Macao government, China and Portuguese-speaking countries, to foster intercultural communication and strengthen trade and economic relations among these countries.
